再說一次我願意 - Say Yes Again

再說一次我願意 (Say Yes Again) is an 2022 film out of Taiwan. The movie stars Kent Tsai and Kuo Shu-yao. The movie hit the film festivals in late 2021 before its 2022 release.

Lu is a water ski instructor that falls for Xiao Cai. Lu and Cai date for awhile after a chance meeting. Lu is now ready to take the relationship to the ultimate commitment. Will Cai look pass his video gaming, childish ways? Will Lu's dedication to changing for a family life move Cai to say "yes"?

I miss the romantic stuff out of Taiwan. These days, it seems there's no longer happy endings in Taiwan entertainment. At least from my limited viewership. So this gave me a glimmer of hope. Kent and Kuo were already linked before in an HBO Asia series from a few years back. This pairing gave us another chance to see them in an with another kind of romantic look. Another "what could have been". I would say the movie was really focused on Kent's role with splashes of Kuo.

通靈少女 - The Teenage Psychic - Season One (1)

通靈少女 (The Teenage Psychic), Season One, is an television series out of Taiwan from HBO from 2017. The series stars Kuo Shu-yao. The supporting cast in Kent Tsai and Sylvia Hsieh. It is advertised as the first Mandarin speaking original series from HBO. However, in actuality, maybe around half of the series is in Taiwanese.

The story of a 16 (sixteen) year high school sophomore that is part of the drama club. But what she hides from her schoolmates is that she works at a temple as a psychic. Someone that can communicate with dead people. The story follows her work at the temple and how she uses her skill to help the community around. The other half is her trying to get through adolescence and everything that comes with it.

There are 6 episodes at around 45 minutes. It seemly starts at the beginning of a new semester when a new student shows up and than ends months later at a spring festival talent show. Without giving allow the main plot points too much, the story contains a lot of sadness. Although things are resolved, it still a very sad series. Which is what I would expect from a Taiwanese series that seems to have a little more creative freedom and doesn't necessarily have to take ratings into affect.

I like the series portrayal of people living their lives in Taipei. I like the slice of HS that I didn't get from Taipei life having grown up in the US. I like how the community of Taiwan seemingly can integrate both Buddhist and Christianity into the story.

At six episodes, its over before you can start to get annoyed at the things it assumes you know. I was left satisfied at the end and prolly might have had trouble going on if there were 10-15 episodes.

If you have HBO, its available as a on demand viewing. I watched it via HBO Go app on old Apple TV.

愛情無全順 - Campus Confidential - Upcoming

愛情無全順 (Campus Confidential) was released in Taipei a few weeks back. It broke into the top ten but didn't take the top spot. The movie reteams Machi Action's main stars, Wilson Chen and Ivy Chen. However, they play off a specific Taiwan phenomena of zhainan (宅男). It's a bit different than your typical nerd as their lives are generally taken care of so well by their momz, that their social awkwardness is massive.

How this story will play out is beyond me. I just know that it seems like a neat concept.

南方小羊牧場 - When A Wolf Falls In Love With A Sheep - Upcoming

南方小羊牧場 (When A Wolf Falls In Love With A Sheep) was released last year in 2012 in November in both Taipei and here in Los Angeles. Yes, it was here and I missed it. I saw the posters, but I just didn't find time to go.

The movie is based on a love story that unfolds in Taiwan's notorious cram skool streets. Who's the wolf and who's the sheep? You'll have to watch the film to find out.
