BBS鄉民的正義 - Silent Code

BBS鄉民的正義 (Silent Code) is an 2012 film out of Taiwan. The movie stars Chen Bolin and Ivy Chen. The supporting cast include Puff Kuo.

Bolin is a super hacker. Chen is a leader of a online community called BBS. Bolin's about to graduate college and look for a job. But before he does that, he's been trying to hack BBS. A nosy reporter finds out about BBS and wants to write a story about it. With the help of Bolin, she's engaged with the community. However, there's a mastermind to BBS that people do not see.

This movie was interesting. The BBS world was interesting. They virtualized BBS for us that are watching the film. It probably more like a forum or a guild in real life. It eventually dives into cartoon world for a good part. Almost Matrix style, but the consequence is mob mentality. If you're a fan of Taiwanese films, this is in the middle of the pack more geared towards a younger crowd.

變身 - 變身超人 - Machi Action - The Action Zero

變身/變身超人 (Machi Action/The Action Zero) is an 2013 film out of Taiwan. Directed by the acclaimed Jiu Ba-dao (九把刀), the movie stars Wilson Chen, Chen Ting-hsuan, Puff Kuo, and Owodog. The movie includes many cameos from Taiwan's stars of the past and present. LA Boys to Jaycee Chan, to Vannes Wu.

Wilson is a superhero in costume. He's played this character for 10+ years now. In recent years, the ratings for the show are dismal. But the owner of the TV station says that its the heart of the show that matters. Giving voice to the weak. When the owner dies, the station is taken over from his daughter whom recently returned from her studies in the good ol' US of A. Armed with modern stats and experts from Japan, they set out to revamp the show. First things first though, they have to kill off Wilson's character and his good buddy the monster. Without a job, Wilson trys to make ends meat and eventually finds success hawking items on a local infomercial type program. But the things he says of the items are fabricated. Causing him and the public to dislike him. With a renewed sense of propose, he tried to get back into the superhero business. Will he succeed?

This movie was super fun to watch. Mainly because of the who's who of Taiwan entertainment showing up for cameos. The story was straight forward. The main problem for me is that the protagonist wasn't very likable. The love interest was also a little off. Plus, Chen Ting-Hsuan and Puff Kuo looked too much alike. So much so that I got them confused. Yes, their hair is a bit different, but their facial features are not and very similar. With close ups, the hair is often left out.

I do recommend this film even with all its flaws. It was an enjoyable watch.

愛情無全順 - Campus Confidential - Upcoming

愛情無全順 (Campus Confidential) was released in Taipei a few weeks back. It broke into the top ten but didn't take the top spot. The movie reteams Machi Action's main stars, Wilson Chen and Ivy Chen. However, they play off a specific Taiwan phenomena of zhainan (宅男). It's a bit different than your typical nerd as their lives are generally taken care of so well by their momz, that their social awkwardness is massive.

How this story will play out is beyond me. I just know that it seems like a neat concept.

變身 - Machi Action - Upcoming

變身 (Machi Action) was release this past weekend in Taipei. It is the tent pole movie for the Taiwan industry. Directed by the acclaimed Jiu Ba-dao (九把刀), it is expected to do very well. It has received wide spread Taiwan entertainment support.

The movie follows the life of our hero who spends his prime years playing a superhero a la Power Rangers. But when he's replaced, he's looks for the next chapter of his life and how to continue on, but no longer as THE superhero.

Look super interesting. So interesting that the Popu Lady gals did the 變身 pose with an alien life form.

台北飄雪 - Snowfall In Taipei - Upcoming

台北飄雪 (Snowfall In Taipei) is being released in Taipei this weekend. The movie stars Wilson Chen as an ordinary guy that finds a wayward pop star. Of course it looks like they fall for each other. Looks like a rom-com, but more rom.

Looks well enough for me to go look for if it reaches Los Angeles.

戀愛恐慌症 - Lovesick - Upcoming

戀愛恐慌症 (Lovesick) is being released in Taipei this weekend. The movie stars Ariel Lin and Wilson Chen. Lin plays a gal who's been hurt from a previous relationship to meeting Chen, a doctor she magically meets at an hospital. Insert other fun hijinx to connect these two and you've got a Taiwanese rom-com. Nice. Or not. Production value looks good and it also has an who's who of other Taiwanese celebs.

Kung Fu Hip-Hop 2 -- 精舞門 2

Kung Fu Hip-Hop 2 (精舞門 2) is a 2010 film out of Zhong Guo. The movie stars Wilson Chen, Zhou Qiqi, Wang Zi, and Michael Tse. The movie is a non related sequel to the 2008 film.

Wilson Chen is the leader of a dance crew whom is seemingly unbeaten in its local urban circles. In its efforts to not "sell out", it refuses to join competitions or dance for money. Wilson is a dance instructor at a local dance gym and takes on a new student, Zhou Qiqi whom is there because her boyfriend told her to. Michael Tse plays Zhou's boyfriend that is both in control and manipulative. Zhou however finds escape in her new urban dancing and starts falling for Chen. Tse doesn't take lightly to this and forces his hand to show Chen his place in society. Zhou comes from money and how can Chen provide for her. Chen's group breaks up and is forced to join a competition to raise money for a member's sick mom. Let the dancing begin!

Man, I don't even know where to begin with this movie. Zhou Qiqi is amazingly beautiful. Stunning. That was worth the ride for me. Since I liked the first movie, maybe I had a little bit of higher expectation for this film. Which I shouldn't have. It was cheezy and the story was cliche all over. You knew what was going to happen a mile away. The dancing was a little better this time around. Mad prompts to the guys that can put this out and be proud. But they should keep it domestic to Zhong Guo and not let it get out.

Give Love - 愛得起

Give Love (陳柏霖) is a 2009 film out of Hong Kong. The film stars Wilson Chen and Gigi Leung. Supporting cast include Shaun Tam and Shao Bing.

The movie is about story of two brothers played by Wilson Chen and Shao Bing. Gigi Leung enters their life. Gigi first enters Chen's life as she's on a flight for Hangzhou. Chen's is the flight counter rep. Chen instantly has a crush on Gigi. Fast forward a year later. Gigi is on a flight back to Hong Kong and is now engaged. Gigi is going to spend a month or so prepping for a wedding reception for her Hong Kong friends and family. Gigi has already tied the knot in China and is officially married. In a strange tale of coincidence, Gigi's husband is Chen's brother and Gigi is staying with him for a month. However, Gigi doesn't know or remember their first encounter.

That's enough for you to know that madness ensues and that that Chen and Gigi get together somehow. Because you got to give love.

In all, the movie was cliche after cliche. It became very predictable and boring as the movie went on. Going into the movie, I thought there would be more story arcs. But it was just one and bored me out.

詭絲 - Silk

Silk (詭絲) is 2006 film out of Taiwan starring Chen Chang with a supporting cast of 大S (Barbie Hsu), Wilson Chen, Karena Lam, and Janine Chang.

Chen Chang plays a cop with extraordinary vision. So good, he can see the feathers of the birds flying above him as well an expert lip reader and a sharp shooter. A cop with an extreme temper to go with it. Chen Chang gets re-assigned to a special paranormal division for all the previously mentioned skillz, but mostly for his keen eyesight. The time has trapped a ghost with a special technology called the Menger Sponge. The plot thickens as the guy that put this team together is a little tipsy and doesn't play by the rules. Rules fly out the window and the triller horror begins.

When I first heard about this movie back in 2007, I thought it was a Japanese movie. I didn't find much more back in the day, but when I saw it via Netflix in 2008, I realized it was a Taiwan movie. With the supporting cast a who's who of the "it" actors and actresses, I was pleasantly surprised.

The action, suspense, solving of the mystery, and the resolution all left me satisfied. Before I started the film, I thought it was going to be a movie like Ringu or The Ring or ghost with hair that covers the face, etc. type movie. Boy was I wrong. It was a mystery and the subplots revolving around the main plot made it all the more intriguing.

I highly recommend this film.
