Iceman - 冰封俠:重新之門

冰封俠:重新之門 (Iceman) is an 2014 film. The movie stars Donnie Yen and Eva Huang. The supporting cast include Wang Baoqiang and Simon Yam. The movie is a sort of a time travel adventure.

Donnie plays a He Ying, a high ranking official during the Ming Dynasty. On a quest to retrieve a time travel item for the Emperor, he's attacked and trapped in ICE. In 2014, he's found and defrosted. But now n 2014, He needs to relearn everything, including finding out that toilet water isn't for drinking. Haha, so funny.

Donnie Yen is comedy in action. You NEED to put away logic and just go with it. Its a comedy. Imagine if Captain America has his own movie to find out how 2014 was like, but he's from 1776. That's kinda what this is like.

Just enjoy Donnie and him finding out about the modern world. Get a boba, some chips, and chillax.

White Boy Rick - 藥命人生

White Boy Rick is an 2018 film. The movie stars Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt. The film is based on the real life events of the main character. Rick is still serving time in prison.

Based in 1980s Detroit, the Wershe family is getting by and Rick SR sells guns. Rick JR learns the trade and starts to sell to local gangsters. The feds recruit Rick to catch the local players in the gang that go up all the way to city hall. Rick is white and the gangsters are black. He stands out and given this name by the local press.

The movie was more like a docu-drama than a movie. Although there are scenes of emotion in the Wershe family, it not sustained. And eventually goes back to the Rick story of entering the drug trade. The story is that the feds used Rick to convict people, but didn't protect him. Rick was put in prison for 30 years.

I rented this movie via T-Mobile Tuesday Redbox promo.

A Simple Favor - 失蹤網紅

A Simple Favor (失蹤網紅) is an 2018 film. The movie stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding. The movie was filmed after Golding's turn as Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians. And it was released about a month after that.

Kendrick plays Stephanie Smothers, a widowed single mother that runs an online vlog. While she's picking up her son one day, she befriends Emily Nelson, played by Blake Lively, whom also has a son in the same class as Stephanie's son. The two sons have play dates and Stephanie starts to get closer to Emily. Many more play dates later, Emily ask Stephanie a simple favor of watching her son for the afternoon. However, this time, she doesn't come back. Stephanie doesn't give up and helps Emily's husband Sean Townsend, played by Henry Golding, in their search for her. No body is found so the mystery deepens. Will they find Emily, can Stephanie resist Sean?

This was actually a pretty fun watch. I rented it mainly because of Golding, but it was definitely a Kendrick film, accounting for over 75% of the acting. Kendrick plays an timid single do gooder mother at the beginning of the film, but transforms into something more like Emily by the end of the film. Although a bit unbelievable, it was really fun to watch the metamorphosis. Whenever the children were involved, that's when the movie dragged because it didn't forward the story along and made the movie more grounded and real. The movie excelled at making a really absurd situation fun with Kendrick, Golding, and Lively.

I got this film via T-Mobile Tuesday Redbox promo.
