Captain Marvel - 驚奇隊長

Captain Marvel (驚奇隊長) is an 2019 film. The movie stars Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson. The supporting cast include Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. It is the 21st film of the MCU and the first (1st) of three (3) for 2019. The character is based on the Carol Danvers version of Captain Marvel.

On the Kree homeworld of Hala, we see Vers getting trained to kick @$$. Vers is part of a elite team of Kree soldiers sent to stop the infiltration of another alien race, the Skrulls. When they get to a Kree empire border planet that has been infiltrated, Vers is captured by the Skrulls. On the Skrull ship, Vers memories are being looked at as they are trying to mine a "lightspeed" core, currently located on Earth. Vers breaks free and falls to Earth. Once there, Nick Fury, is sent onsite to arrest Vers. But things go south when Skrulls show up and Vers gives chase. Can Vers find out her past and stop the Skrulls with the help of Fury?

Another good addition to the MCU universe. Many revelations can now be assumed from Carol's big back story. As a stand alone without taking the MCU into account, this would have been a well made origin movie. All the actors were top notch. The story itself needed the MCU to make it more than it is. We do find out that she is Carol Davers. Vers is now her Kree name. Take a look at that.

I went with my now teenage daughter and she loved the film. I can see why. Very strong female characters are presented in this movie. I also asked if she like Captain Marvel more than Wonder Women. My daughter enjoyed this movie much more than I and wants to watch it again. I, however, am not clamoring to watch this again. However, as a MCU fan, this is a must watch.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - 亞瑟:王者之劍

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (亞瑟:王者之劍) is an 2017 movie. The film stars Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur. The supporting cast include Jude Law, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, and Djimon Hounsou. The movie is a new look at the story of King Arthur directed by Guy Ritchie.

Jude Law plays Vortigern, who kills Arthur's parents to gain the throne. Arthur escapes, found by prostitutes, and raised him with street smarts. Arthur runs into some trouble and falls in with some folks trying to pull Excalibur from the stone. Arthur pulls it and thus begins his story to overthrowing Vortigern.

Short summary because the movie was super complicated. Seriously complicated. BUT it was fun and the story was another realistic take on the legend of Arthur. In this case, taking a more rags to riches and man of the streets. Charlie ends up being a reluctant king who overcomes.

If it comes on TV, I'd stop to watch. Not sure if I go out of my way to watch again.

Sherlock Holmes - 福爾摩斯

Sherlock Holmes (福爾摩斯) is a 2009 film out of the US. But the movie is based entirely in London in 1891. The film stars Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie.

Based in 1891 London, Robert Downey, Jr. plays Sherlock Holmes. Holmes infiltrates and stops Blackwood in a black magic ritual. Jude Law as Doctor John Watson is along for the ride and helps Holmes. From here on out, we are given bits and pieces of Blackwood's master scheme. Holmes and Watson seem to show up regularity when things go bad and get clues to solve a mystery.

The movis is a Guy Richie film. If you're a fan of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking and Snatch, you'll be a fan of this film. The film has a lot of the Richie film making qualities. The movie had a "epic" feel as it recreated 1891 London. The slow motions. The camera angles! Its a Richie film through and through.

I can see why it did so well at the box office and how word of mouth made it a bigger hit.

So, were there Asians in this film? Yes! They had a scene where Watson just got a little change and was contemplating if he should join some Chinese coolies in a gambling match. In another scene, a kung fu coolie comes out of the sewer to beat up on Holmes. Not very glamorous, but they do get some screen time.

My Blueberry Nights - 我的藍莓夜

Originally posted on xanga. Updated 1/21/2009.

I recently watched Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights starring Norah Jones. Made in 2006 and released in 2007, it finally made it to DVD in 2008.

I didn't want to write a blog about it right after I watched it, because I wanted to give it a little time to rest and for a couple weeks to go by. I must say that I thought the film to be average. Kind of how I felt after 2046.

Chungking Express is in my top 20 films all time and In The Mood For Love is my my top 100. So, I have great expectations when a new Wong Kar-wai film comes out. I try not to let the hype get me, but its rather hard since his films take forever to get released.

I am glad I watched it because it was very stylist and revolves around love in isolation, the theme I find in all Wong Kar-wai films.

I also have seen way too many films with Jude Law. That guy needs to chill and stop being in everyones artsy fartsy movie. Because he's been in over 25 movies since 1999. I must have seen 20 of those and not because of him, but because of the films. The guy knows the good scripts!

If you're expecting Wong Kar-wai flair, this movie will give it to you.
