天后之戰 - Faithball - Upcoming

天后之戰 (Faithball) is being released this weekend in Taipei. Yet another baseball movie. This one stars Anthony Neely and Chantel Liu. Chantel's been quite popular for the last few years. I especially like when she was on a Taiwan travel show called Taiwan a gogo broadcast on LA's 18.8. I am giving this a chance because of Chantel.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - 吸血鬼獵人:林肯總統

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (吸血鬼獵人:林肯總統) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Benjamin Walker. The supporting cast include Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Rufus Sewell. The movie is based on an 2010 novel of the same name.

Walker plays Lincoln. When Lincoln was a wee lad, he was a worker for a mill where his parents are killed by vampires. Unable to prove vampires, he grows up and finds a mentor willing to teach him the art of killing vampires. However, Lincoln still wants to change the world around him through the political system and eventually becomes president. When a vampires try to take over, Lincoln must come out of retirement and take them out!

The movie is absurd in its premise that Lincoln was any sort of vampire hunter. But it is a great concept that is embraceable since Lincoln is often ranked among the greats of US presidents. I did and I really enjoyed the movie. I'd watch it if it was on cable again.

Brave - 勇敢傳說

Brave (勇敢傳說) is an 2012 animated film. The movie is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

Based in Scotland, Merida is set to marry. Tradition has that she will marry to another clan. However, Merida is an tomboy and wants nothing of it. Her mother, Queen Elinor is set to make her a proper gal and future Queen. However, a chance encounter with a witch sets in motion a spell that would eventually turn her love ones into bears. Will Merida be able to save her loved ones and the nation?

I got this movie primarily based on the reviews of it as "gal power". I wanted my gurls to watch it and be powerful! Its 2012 and we can do what you want! Well, the movie is actually quite scary in parts, but they made it through it. Moral of the story, follow yo heart and try not to destroy the people around you.

Safe - 火線反擊

Safe (火線反擊) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Jason Statham. The supporting cast include Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon, James Hong, Reggie Lee, and Anson Mount. The movie is based New York City.

Jason Statham plays Luke Wright, an disgraced ex-cop that works as a trash guy. His wife is killed by the russian mafia and they vow to make his life a living hell. The prove this point by killing a fellow tenant at an shelter. On the metro one day thinking of suicide, he runs in to Mei, played by Chan. Luke spends the rest of the movie saving her and taking out all the baddies in NYC.

Classic Jason Statham movie. Mystery man with a unspeakable past with extremely voilent skill sets that can set the city ablaze. This movie is no different. The stereotypes of this movie go overboard with every race they decide to cover. With the Chinatown triad. They do it all ching chong out. As expected by Hollywood.

Jeremy Lin Update - Doing Good

I haven't updated on Jeremy Lin since last October 2012! Before the NBA season started. Since that time, Jeremy Lin's NBA career has had only a few bright moments that match the Linsanity times. Jeremy Lin had a rough pre-season. Right before the start of the 2012-2013 NBA season, the Rockets traded for James Harden and offered him a max contract of around $80 million USD. Jeremy Lin hasn't had the impact on the Rockets as he had with the Knicks. The Rockets sitting in the 8th spot during the All-Star break, but Portland and my hometown Lakers are hot on their heals. Only about 2 months left to move up or secure their 8th spot. If they get on a run, they can get up to 7th. If Denver or Golden Stare falter, they can move up even higher.

I've had NBA league pass since Jeremy's breakout last February. I've diligently watch most Rocket games, but not always in its entirety. But Kevin McHale's system is not suited for Jeremy Lin's strengths. More often than not, Jeremy dribbles the ball up and passes it away and runs to the corner and stays there. On defense, the Rocket's big men look like Dwight Howard, un-interested in defending the pick and roll. Jeremy is often left on an island and gets blamed for letting his guy score. Jeremy Lin also seems to get a lot of ticky tack foul calls, while getting hammered repeatedly on the offensive side with barely a call going his way most of the time. If Houston wants to maximize their investment in Jeremy Lin, trade him or get another back court friendly coach that knows how to teach team defense.

On a positive note, the Rockets are 29-26 and in playoff position. When the season started, there were few that would have predicted they would be playoff bound.

On a even more awesomely positive note, Jeremy Lin launch his foundation recently, The Jeremy Lin Foundation.

And another thing, Jeremy Lin's documentary, Linsanity will get its day in the theaters. Getting shown at the 2013 Sundance festival and pick up for US and overseas distribution has been awesome. Along with a more than successful Kick Starter campaign.

Check out all the awesome Jeremy Lin YouTube stuff since October as well.

The Grey - 即刻獵殺

The Grey (即刻獵殺) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Liam Neeson and wolves! The supporting cast include Frank Grillo and Dermot Mulroney.

Liam Neeson is a expert marksmen that kills wolves that threaten the safety of his company's oil operations. After his most current assignment, he's headed home with the rest of the crew, but his plans change when the plane crashes in a blizzard. The remaining survivors are in the wilderness and must now protect themselves from the local wolves. One by one, the remaining survivors are taken out by the wolves.

This movie was very morbid. Wolves are tough and they run in packs that make them very powerful. The struggle to survive when other humans are involved are always tricky. Humans suck and they are selfish. As is the case here. Had the survivors bonded together a little better, they may have made it out. Who knows, its a movie. The director takes you in the direction they seem fit. Liam has transformed himself into mister action and this vehicle was further proof.

Flight - 機密真相

Flight (機密真相) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Denzel Washington. The supporting cast include Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood, Melissa Leo, and John Goodman. This film was in no way based on the US Airways Flight 1549 crash on the Hudson, as I had incorrectly assumed.

Denzel plays Whip, a Captain of an commercial airline. On an routine flight from Orlando to Atlanta, the plane malfunctions and Whip is forced to take evasive action. This action leads to an simi safe landing of his plane. 4 passengers and 2 crew members did not survive. Throughout the film, you'll witness Whip drink his way through ordeal after ordeal. Finally faced with an hearing, what will he do. Lie himself out of it again?

The film was extremely hard to watch. Whip is not a good character. Whip is not a good guy. Whip is someone that seeks to abuse his position and leverage those around him. However, this is "America", the land of second chances. Time after time, people let him go protecting their own butts. Whip doesn't change. I take no pleasure thinking about the movie as I write this. I would not recommend this. I may force my kids to watch this when they get older. Bad decisions, self destructive behavior, abuser, and user. Not much to say.

A Simple Life - 桃姐

A Simple Life (桃姐) is an 2012 film out of Hong Kong. The movie stars Andy Lau and Deanie Ip. The movie was based on true life events of the screenwriter, Roger Lee.

Deanie Ip plays Sister Tao or Ah Tao. Ah Tao has been a "maid" of the Leung family, based in Hong Kong, since she was 13. And 60 years later, she is still the family "maid". The Leung family have all but migrated away from Hong Kong. The lone leftover, Roger, has come back to Hong Kong after an 10 absence. The movie starts with the daily life of Roger as an film producer. After a trip back from Beijing, he sees that no one is on the window. Ah Tao usually waits at the window for Roger to come back. Ah Tao has just suffered an stoke and is moved to a elderly nursing home. We see her life from recovery to a relapse. Along the way, Roger becomes her god-son and takes care of her, a little like how Ah Tao took care of the Leung family members through the years. The story than follows Roger taking care of Ah Tao, Ah Tao's life in the nursing home, the Leung family in its current state.

The movie is well made and very simliar to The Way We Are. It is very much based on life in Hong Kong. It shows the "way it use to be" and the transformation of Hong Kong as well. When you follow this storyline, there's both a sense of tenderness and sadness. You see that relationships are based on reciprocity, action, and ultimately time spent together. Roger does not just throw Ah Tao into a nursing home for her to rotting away, like we see happening to the others around her. But Roger spends time with her and cares for her. As I see my aging family members, I hope I will be just as or more loving.

It is well deserving of all the awards its won. The Asian awards market is nothing like the Oscars, it really does judge the best of the best, because the market is so small in general.

The Expendables 2 - 浴血任務2

The Expendables 2 (浴血任務2) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham. The rest of the ensemble cast include Jet Li, Yu Nan, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wow, what a cast. Did will enough at the global box office that a second sequel is in the works.

The movie is much like the first one. Sly plays the leader and has to recover something from a far away land that has no stable government. Lead by JCVD, this rouge terrorist group is looking to do something bad with a black market weapon. Enter Bruce Willis asking Sly for a favor. Off they go to this country to get this thing. Insert all the craziness of all these cast members.

This movie was entertaining. Fun to see all these old skool action heroes try to make it look good. Some did, some didn't. Arnold is passed his prime. I just watched the Running Man the other day. Classic 1980s movie. Not classic in his cameo in Expendables installment.

Jet Li only see action in the first 5-10 minutes of the film. After that, he's not even on the team. They left the Asian representation to Yu Nan, the government liaison. For some reason, they were trying to play Yu and Sly in some "love" relationship. Didn't work and it was just awkward. Please don't do that again.

If you liked the first one and are as old or older than me, you may enjoy this. Lots of fighting, shooting, and explosions.

Magic Mike - 舞棍俱樂部

Magic Mike (舞棍俱樂部) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, and Cody Horn. The supporting cast include Matt Bomer, Olivia Munn, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey. The movie was directed by the acclaimed Steven Soderbergh.

Channing Tatum plays Michael Lane, a roof specialist in Tampa Florida. When he's called to a job, he's paired with Adam "The Kid", played by Alex Pettyfer, he teaches him the trade. When the two bump into each other on the street, Lane makes The Kid pay him back. That means going to the male strip club, Xquisite, and performing. Lane's one of the stars there with the handle, Magic Mike. Adam eventually gets into the business. The struggle to maintain this hard partying life catches up to them.

Channing Tatum can dance. He was in one of the Step Up movies. Alex and the other guys impressed me more. But they kind of just the "grind" dance most of the time. The movie itself is a nice look into a lifestyle I am not familiar with. What kept me involved was the wooing of Adam's sister by Mike. It made no sense. No sense at all. But it is a movie, things that seem like it should be improbable happen. It happens in real life! I won't be a repeat watcher. Unique story, but not compelling enough for me.

獵豔 - Zoom Hunting

獵豔 (Zoom Hunting) is an 2010 film out of Taiwan. The movie stars Janine Chang (Ning Chang), Chu Chih-ying (Zhu Zhu-Ying), and Wen Sheng-Hao. The supporting cast include Chou Heng-yin (Zhou Heng-Yin) and Michelle Krusiec. The movie is director Cho Li's debut and ventures into suspense thriller territory.

Chang plays Ruyi, a freelance photographer on an hiatus. Ruyi randomly takes pictures of things all around her balancy and accidentally captures an couple across the way getting it on. Ruyi is intrigued and starts to take more pictures and starts to stalk them. Yupe, stalk them. From this, he finds that the man across the way is in relations with someone not his wife! From there, the thriller goes into overdrive as she is torn between keeping quite or telling the wife. Along the way, Ruyi confides in her sister. Ruyi's sister is an writer of erotic thriller a la 50 shades. There's a larger mystery that unfolds.

The movie was pretty good for a movie out of Taiwan. If the movie were made in HK or even the US, it would be a straight to video movie. The acting was ok and the story itself was hard to follow. I found myself having to rewind and go back to plot points that past me by. Which isn't good. However, for Taiwan movie buffs, you'll need to watch this one to see the progression made in Taiwanese cinema since.

I covered its upcoming release in Taipei back in January 2010.

Safe House - 狡兔計畫

Safe House (狡兔計畫) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. The supporting cast include Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, and Sam Shepard.

Reynolds plays Matt Weston, the care taker of an CIA safe house in Cape Town, South Africa. When Denzel Washington as Tobin Frost is taken to the safe house, they both make a run for it when the CIA team sent there try to clean house. Along the way, they two have to make an uneasy relationship for survival.

The movie was a triller with action and very very complicated plot. The plot is so out there that its hard to believe, but the movie takes place in Cape Town and it seemed like a really interesting place. The concept of the safe house and other things are all talked about in other CIA movies and television serious but is highlighted here. When the safe house is no longer safe. A must watch for any action triller junkies. It follows very much the vien of Denzel movies like Man On Fire.

Lawless - 法外之地

Lawless (法外之地) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy. The supporting cast include Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce. The movie is based on an novel based on the Bondurant moonshine business of the Prohibition era.

As Prohibition kicks into swing, the moonshine business becomes big business for the folks of the Appalachian mountains. Fast forward to the 1931, the Bondurant family is at the head of the class. The Bondurant borthers of Forrest, Howard and Jack have it good. Forrest is the brians, Howard is the muscle, and Jack is the youngest, seen the least and starts to mess things up. The law has shown up town and tries to take everyone down. Not out of business if you play nice with them.

The movie was pretty low key. I am on the fence of recommending this movie. It does present a slice 1930s prohibition era madness. And it does have Jessica Chastain. But besides that, it's not much of a compiling story. It is unique, but it may be subject matter that isn't all that mainstream.

The Amazing Spider-Man - 蜘蛛人:驚奇再起

The Amazing Spider-Man (蜘蛛人:驚奇再起) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. The movie is an reboot of the previous Spider-Man trilogy. Although the movie did not fare as well box office wise, an sequel is in the works with essentially the same creative team.

Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker, a high school nerd that gets an internship at Oscorp. It is there that he bumps into Gwen Stacey, played by Emma Stone, an classmate from school. On his very first day there, he is bitten by a spider, a radioactive spider. You know the story, Peter is transformed the next morning and has magical spider like powers like sticking to walls and great agility. Eventually, his self discovery leads to selfishness and Uncle Ben pays the price. Enter his work at the Oscorp lab, where the Lizard is created, he fights this reptilian to death. And maybe gets the gal.

This movie was very entertaining. I don't know how many times I've seen the Spidey origin story told. Comics, cartoons, television, and now movies. I bet there have been other ways that escape my dull mind now. That said, the film had great acting, well paced story sprinkled with lots of action. I will be watching this again for sure.

Fast and Furious 6 (玩命關頭6) is going to be released in the US on May 24, 2013. If I were a guessing man, it'll be released in Asia first in April. The movie is helmed by Justin Lin again with the majority of the Fast Five cast returning. Throw in a new bad guy even the government can't handle, you've got yourself a bas@$$ movie!

The one minute teaser was released during the 2013 Super Bowl. And it was a doozy! I loved it. I am really excited to see this again. I've seen bits and pieces of Fast Five multiple times. DVD, Blu-ray, airplane, and on cable. Almost every time it's on re-run, I stop by for more.
