披荊斬棘 - Call Me by Fire - Season 2 - Premiere

披荆斩棘 (Call Me By Fire) Season 2 is a 2022 variety show out of Zhong Guo. The premise of the show is 32 "brothers" whom come from different walks of the entertainment industry come together to form a final group. In essence, it is a survival show format.

The second Season premiered this pass weekend. I was able to watch it and see a lot of folks I grew up watching. In my opinion, this second season is more to my liking than the first season. I just know more people from the second season so I react to them more.

For me, I really like Will Pan and Darren Wang. Those two are among my favorites. Will Pan has been a regular IQIYI guy these last few years. Darren Wang is just a funny dood.

I’ve played the Will Pan Group performance multiple times this week.

全职高手 - The King's Avatar

The King's Avatar (全职高手) is an 2019 drama out of Zhong Guo. The series stars Yang Yang and Jiang Shuying aka Maggie Jiang. There is a large list of supporting cast that go in and out of focus. But the focus stays on Yang Yang's character. I caught this on and off on Netflix from December 2020 through January 2021. But stopped. I finished the last 2/3s during 2021 March and April.

Yang Yang plays Ye Qiu, who is the captain of a Glory team that just won the championship. However, Qiu's management wants to make changes to make more money. Qiu is forced out in a bad way. Qiu wants to keep a low profile and changes his name to Ye Xiu. As Xiu, he applies as a IT network admin working at an e-games shop. There Xiu, regains his love for Glory and re-builds a team to compete. Can Xiu resurrect his gaming life after being forced out.

This series runs a quick 40 episodes. At the end, our family was hoping for another 20. It is rare that we feel this way from a 40 episode series. But we did. There are so many 50+ episode series that do not deserve it. This one did.

I recently started rewatching here and there and I cannot believe how well made it is. This is 2022 now and it has held up against the test of time. Yang Yang is the highlight of the series. But the concept and the many storylines of the team that is built was done extremely well too.

Our whole family is waiting for the 2 series, but it looks like there are no plans. So sad. Yang Yang is a little older and moved over to other types of roles since. E-sports is huge in Zhong guo, but the other series about this are mainly based on LOL, vs a fictional one of Glory.

My Love For Los Angeles Sports Teams

I have lived in Los Angeles most of my life and have been following sports here for awhile. I started with basketball during the showtime era. In the old days, basketball was on local television for most road games. The home games were blacked out so you can go to them. When cable came around, they started to broadcast the home games, but my family did not have it. I remember watching the Lakers and UCLA basketball with my grandfather growing up. That's where I watched 4 of the showtime championships. UCLA basketball was on as well, but there were not as many games. My grandfather became a UCLA fan because of John Wooden as he was a basketball PE coach back in Taiwan.

Along the way, I also watched the Rams and Raiders on local Los Angeles stations back in the day. I gravitated toward the Rams more because of Dickerson, White, and Bell. I was also a fan of the Raiders as well. Both had mild success prior to their LA departures. I ended up going to college football until the end of Pete Carrolls run at USC. I followed both USC and UCLA.

My love for baseball is also there, but there are so many games and they take a long time. It is very hard to sit through games, so highlights are a very good thing. I have followed both the Dodgers and Angels. I was a fan or Reggie and the penguin as a youngster. I am big Ohtani fan.

When the Chargers moved to LA, I started to follow them a bit more. Now with Hubert, I am a fan and have enjoyed watching the games too.

When I got out of school, for the first time in my life, I had just a little bit more spending money, I got some really discounted Clipper tickets. They had just moved to Staples and could not fill it up like the Lakers. They ran these a package of 10 games with the likes of Iverson, Duncan, etc. for $200 in the nosebleeds. A bunch of us got the package. We would hang for dinner before the games. The games were always on the weekdays. It was fun and cheap. I always remember those years foundly.

Not sure why I like sports so much, but as I have gotten older, I have drifted more to football as it is the least commitment in terms of time. Basketball and baseball have too many games. Football is 20-21 games at most.

[Update] Vin Scully died Tuesday at the age of 94. Vin was the voice of the Dodgers for 67 years, retiring in 2016. Vin started Los Angeles broadcasting in 1958 when the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn New York to Los Angeles. My memories of Vin started in the 1980s listening to him on TV. When I started driving in the 1990s, I worked as a delivery driver for serveral years and caught a lot of games on the road, especially all the east coast games and day games. Vin was always a familar and calming voice. Vin's voice was so distinct that as he scaled back in his later years, I was never happy with the new guys.

I was also around for Chick Hearns last 20 years. I am very blessed to have regularly been in the preseence of these Los Angeles sports legends. It is very unlikely we'll ever get another Chick or Vin. RIP

[Update 15 August 2022] Andor has been pushed out to September 21, 2022 with 3 episodes. Most of the articles are suggesting the move from Disney is to give She-hulk more time without compeition. That also means that Andor may be tracking really well and set for a Mandalorian type release. I certainly hope so, the Andor trailer looks pretty amazing.
