That's My Boy - 爸爸的好兒子

That's My Boy (爸爸的好兒子) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. The supporting cast include Leighton Meester, Vanilla Ice, James Caan, Milo Ventimiglia, Ciara, and Todd Bridges. This movie was a box office under performer compared to Sandler's other blockbuster films.

Adam Sandler plays Donny, a young teenager that get's his 22 year old teacher pregnant in the 1980s. Donny makes headline news and is instantly a celebrity. Fast forward to present day USA, Donny's a washed up once famous child star that can barely get by life. Donny's got no money and will face jail time. The child Donny and his teacher had together is now quite successful. Donny decides to re-enter's his son, Todd's life, to gain some financial rewards. Namely, a spot on a reality show. However, Donny and Todd are at odds with each other.

This could be the film that pushes every gross out to the limit. This is a massive departure from other Sandler films like Wedding Singer, Click, and even Just Go With It. This was gross out humor that had very little laughs. I cringed more than I laughed out loud. Which was not pleasant. I won't recommend this film to Sandler fans or other humans. If you really like raunchy humor to the max, this one is for you. Just not a lot of laughs.

Premium Rush - 超急快遞

Premium Rush (超急快遞) is an 2012 film. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, and Dania Ramirez. The supporting cast include Jamie Chung and Wolé Parks.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a New York city bicycle messenger. Wilee picks up a package from Nima, a Chinese immigrant working at a local college. The package is to be sent to a Chinese smuggler to bring Nima's son and mother to the USA. A local loan shark passes the information to a dirty NYPD detective with money problems. The package contains a $50,000 claim ticket. The NYPD cop, Bobby Monday, played by Michael Shannon, goes on a wild pursuit of said package. Will Nima's ticket get to the smuggler or will Monday get it. The rush is on.

This is a good movie. Lots of action, suspense, and an easy to follow story. JGL does it again. Taking on a genre story that makes us care. The cat and mouse chase between Monday and the bicycle messagers was pretty good too.

Where da Asians at? Everywhere. Unfortunately, it was a NYC Chinatown story. You know, that's the only place Chinese ppl exist in major metropolitan cities. And they are always up to no good, always up to some black trade. Will Hollywood always default to this when Chinatown is involved? I have no hope that this will change within my lifetime. Maybe my grandchildren will see some real changes. Until that time, I can only cringe and bare these "Chinatown" inspired movies.

Jamie Chung and Aasif Mandvi played major supporting roles in the film. Jamie's Korean-American, but takes on Mandarin for some parts of the story. Which I thought wasn't too bad, it was noticeably "americanized". But good enough to pass off to the rest of the English only speaking world. Aasif does his thing as the dispatcher, killed it.

I do recommend watching this movie at least once. JGL kills it and Jamie's Mandarin is quite cute.

The Watch - 巡邏驚很大

The Watch (巡邏驚很大) is an 2012 film. The movie stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Rosemarie DeWitt. The movie was originally named "The Neighborhood Watch" with a vague comedic premise. But the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood-watch member not only forced the name change, but the delay of an late spring release to late summer.

Ben Stiller plays Evan Trautwig, a Costco store manager and all around good guy. A good guy for the neighborhood. A neighborhood watch is formed when some suspicious activity happens. A mix-match of people join with their own agendas. Along the way, they discover suspicious activities and its Aliens! That leads them on a wild goose chase around the normally quiet suburban town. In the end, all the main characters of The Watch have a mid life coming of age storyline.

This movie is ok. Funny and in my opinion, worth a watch. But that's it. Just watch it once for the laughs and move on. Vince Vaughn and to a lesser degree, Ben Stiller, are producing funny films that don't merit repeat watching. I am hoping for more Dodgeball than this. Maybe a Zoolander or Tropic Thunder to top off their careers before they start to play supporting dad roles.

Motorway - 車手

Motorway (車手) is an 2012 film out of Hong Kong. The movie stars Shawn Yue and Anthony Wong. The supporting cast includes Barbie Hsu, Josie Ho, Gordon Lam, and Michelle Ye.

Shawn Yue plays Cheung, a young cop that likes to drive fast with a vengeance. Anthony Wong plays Lo, a cop that's about to retire. Lo and Cheung make the most unlikely pair, but they both like to drive and know cars. A diamond makes its way to HK and two bad guys go after it. But one of the guys is in jail. The other guy, who's an expert driver, bust the guy out of jail and kills some cops along the way. A citywide manhunt starts and the cops chase and chase these two men. Cheung seems to have luck and tails the the get away driver, but doesn't have luck. On a mountain top range not unlike something out of an Initial D comic, a deadly chase happens. The driver always seems to be a step ahead and take a bunch of cops out. Lo decides to pursue after so many cars are left disabled. Will Cheung and Lo be able to stop these two maniacs from getting the diamond?

This movie was sort of a throw back to the late 90s and early 00s HK films. Very gritty, matter of fact, and straight to the story. Character development is left to a minimum. You figure it out along the way. A chase/heist all put into one, you have tension, suspense, and you feel for the cops. Barbie Hsu's turn as an doctor was just to get some eye candy into the film. It's too bad Michelle Ye is transitioning into more "older" women roles. Ye plays Lo's wife and has short hair. I am sad since Ye is one of my favorite HK actresses and is still quite stunning!

I would highly recommend this film for HK enthusiast. If you're not familiar with HK style, you might not like the lack of character development and purpose of the film.

BTW - the English translation of the title is a bit off. The Zhong Wen version translates to "driver".

Dredd - 超時空戰警

Dredd (超時空戰警) is an 2012 British and South African film. The movie stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. The movie is based on the long running British comic series Judge Dredd. This film is not a remake of the 1995 version called Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone.

Karl Urban plays Dredd who has to train a new rookie judge, Cassandra Anderson, played by Olivia Thirlby. Anderson is part of a new crop of judges that have psychic abilities. Based on these abilities, they can make on the job judgements of life, death, or imprisonment. In most cases, it is death. They track down a drug king pin or queen pin to a local mega city tower run by Ma-Ma, played by Lena Headey. The judges capture a guy that could shut their drug trafficking operations. In turn, Ma-ma locks down the building and all hell breaks loose. Can these two judges withstand the entire crime syndicate of the mega city?

This movie was really fun to watch. Urban plays it straight as Judge Dredd, adding both humanity and humor. Thirlby did a great job of transforming herself during the movie. From reluctant Judge to @$$ kicker. If you're an action geek, the movie is great. No need to read the comics to come along for the ride. The movie was a little reminiscent of a recent Indonesian film, The Raid.

中國合伙人 - 海闊天空 - American Dreams In China - Upcoming

海闊天空/中國合伙人 (American Dreams In China) was released in Zhong Guo over the past weekend and it kicked Iron Man out of first place! It wasn't some other big bad US film that did it, it was an Zhong Guo film. And this film had a star studded cast to boot. Huang Xiaoming, Deng Chao, and Tang Dawei star as the three entrepreneurs that started a tutoring school testing people how to take English test. It's an interesting industry as a whole these days. But the story of how it started should prove to be interesting with some show biz twist.

I for one will be looking forward to this gem making it across the pond.

Silver Linings Playbook - 派特的幸福劇本 - 失戀自作業

Silver Linings Playbook (派特的幸福劇本) is an 2012 film. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. The supporting cast include Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher, Julia Stiles, and John Ortiz. Directed by David O. Russell of The Fighter fame. The movie was adapted from the novel The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick and partly based on David O. Russell's experience with his oldest son, whom had bouts with mental illness.

Bradley Cooper plays Pat Jr, who's spent the last 8 months in a mental institution after being arrested for beating the man his wife was having a affair with. Once home, Pat Jr. sets on a path to repair his marriage to his wife Nikki. However, Pat Jr. is still a bit unstable and lacks some social skills now, such has having no filter for thoughts. Robert De Niro plays Pat Sr., who's recently lost his job and makes a living bookkeeping on the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Pat Jr is obsessed with losing weight and goes out for a jog, bumping into his childhood friend Ronnie, who invites him over for dinner. While at the dinner, Ronnie's sister in law, Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is also invited. Tiffany has been mentally unstable since the death of her police officer husband. During the dinner, a fight erupts, ending in Pat Jr. walking Tiffany home. Pat Jr. starts to run past Tiffany's house during his jogging. Tiffany intercepts him one day and they visit her home. The home was a old garage in the back yard of Tiffany's parents. Tiffany used her insurance movie to convert it, including a dance floor studio type set up on the first floor. Tiffany convinces Pat Jr. to join her in a local dance competition.

The movie was pretty righteous. Pat Jr.'s path to recovery will be a lifelong event as his mental illness will always be a struggle. Cooper does a great job to convey to the audience that he's not all there. You felt that he was pretty unstable. Which doesn't seem a stretch away from his roles in The Hangover and Limitless. Jennifer Lawrence goes in the opposite direction of her Hunger Games role here. Tiffany is played with a strong personality and likes to be in control. Combined with a story that's told in a tremendously sensitive way, you have a great movie. The supporting cast does a good job of painting the world that they live in. Basically revolving around the NFL season.

I highly recommend this film and I saw it via Blu-ray rental.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Upcoming For Fall 2013

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming to the small screen near you. Via ABC for the fall 2013 lineup. We'll see Agent Phil Coulson back from a whole in his chest to lead the assembly of super powered heroes. Super powered "heroes" have fill the small screen landscape for years. In recent memory, we've had Heroes and Alphas. All the way back to The Greatest American Hero. People with powers always makes for interesting television!

The latest trailers and sneaks have us seeing more high quality production brought to the small screen. Some familiar faces from Whedon's past show up and some new faces.

The one I am most glad to see is that of Ming-Na Wen. Wen first came to the public eye with her lead role of sorts in the The Joy Luck Club. Since that time, she's amassed a steady stream of big and small parts that help build her a very strong legacy. It's always nice to see a Asian American Women is a strong role that's not sterotyped for an Asian. Good job Whedon. Your shows seem to try to cast for the acting vs. the ethnic group for the most part. I've noticed that on Firefly, Buffy, and Angel.

I will be looking for the fall television season. It's been a long time (Lost season 3) I've had that feeling. Good job!

Iron Man 3 - 鋼鐵人3 - 鐵甲奇俠3 - 钢铁侠3

The Movie
Iron Man 3 (鋼鐵人3/鐵甲奇俠3/钢铁侠3) is an 2013 film. The film stars Robert Downey, Jr. The supporting cast include Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Ben Kingsley, and Jon Favreau. The movie was released in 3D, IMAX, and IMAX 3D. I was able to catch it via fake IMAX 3D in Downtown Disney's AMC. This movie played more as an sequel to Marvel's Avengers than it was a sequel to Iron Man 2. I liked it better than Iron Man 2 by a long margin and liked it slightly less than Iron Man and Avengers.

The Cast
Tony Stark/Iron Man - Robert Downey, Jr.
Virginia "Pepper" Potts - Gwyneth Paltrow
Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes / Iron Patriot / War Machine - Don Cheadle
Aldrich Killian - Guy Pearce
Dr. Maya Hansen - Rebecca Hall
Happy Hogan - Jon Favreau
Mandarin - Ben Kingsley

Synopsis
Tony Stark is played by Robert Downey, Jr. and is in trouble. We than flashback to NYE 1999 and is voiced-over to how this night caused so much trouble. Tony is trying to get in the pants of a Maya Hansen, played by Rebecca Hall, a botanist set on regeneration. By the end of the night, Maya and Tony hook up. The morning, Tony is out of town leaving a message and making this an official one night stand. That night, Aldrich Killian of AIM, played by Guy Pearce, tries to get Tony to invest in his start up. Tony leaves him hanging. Fast forward to the present. Tony is going nuts after New York and builds and builds lot of Armors. His latest is Mark 42.

The Bad Guys
The bad guys in the movie isn't the ones in front of you. Without spoiling the movie, the twist with the villans is quite awesome. The movie does take liberties with the Extremis storyline from the comics, it was still a great interpretation. You get both Maya and Killian from the comic series. Through in the racist iconic Mandarin, you got yourself a great movie. Not to mention that they repurposed AIM as well.

My Thoughts
I loved the movie! I thought they continued the story as part of Avengers vs. Iron Man 2. That makes you forget that Iron Man 2 existed. Avengers will be such an iconic film for the ages that this one may not stand the test of time. Iron Man (first movie) was also iconic for other reasons, but this can't compare in terms of impact. Iron Man 3 does come out during a down 2013 in the US box office. I do highly recommend this movie

Jeremy Lin's NBA Season Is Over

Jeremy Lin's 2012-2013 NBA campaign came to a halt two weekends ago. The Houston Rockets were beat 4-2 by OKC. Jeremy Lin did not have a good series and missed Games 4 and 5, both wins for the Houston Rockets. In what was typical of the regular, it carried over into the playoffs. Jeremy Lin played limited minutes and the offense was lead by Harden and Parsons.

The season was extremely frustrating for me to watch. Of the 82 games Jeremy Lin played in the regular season, I prolly watched about 70 of them. I also re-watched some games of his where he scored over 20 points, which was very rare. The Houston coaching staff should be turned around. I hope some massive changes are made because the current coaching staff does not utilize Jeremy Lin. During the season, there was a comment made by Jeremy Lin about being "allergic" to the 4th quarters.

This isn't the Sam Cassell and Kenny Smith days. Kenny Smith was the crafty veteran in the twilight of his career. Cassell was the future PG and was groomed and ended the 4th quarters. Jeremy Lin IS the PG, but rarely finished the game or even play beyond 30 minutes during a long stretch of the season while he was playing well.

It's been frustrating year for me in terms of NBA anyways. Being a LA Lakers fan, they were suppose to challenge for the #1 seed of the whole NBA before the season started. But didn't even make it into the playoff picture until end of February. Add that to the Clippers great December and subsequent collapse. Still have hope GS will make it far.

I include the above image because that was often the image I would see when on any NBA pages like Yahoo, ESPN, etc. Guess who ppl want to see?! Jeremy Lin, rockets, you suck. I will cancel NBA league pass next year if you pull that crap again!
