Godzilla Minus One (哥吉拉-1.0) is an 2023 film. It is a re-imagined origin story set in post war Japan. I caught it via Netflix last year.
In post war Japan, a fighter pilot returns home and tries to rebuild. In the midst of all the destruction, the survivors start to piece together and rebuild. All the while, the nuclear effects have seemed to create a creature that destroys. What use to be a small destructive creature is not destroying boats. The make shift team sets out to take care of this new creature.
I was not sure what to make of the movie as I watching as it was slightly different than the other Godzilla movies. And the protagonist was not presented in a good light. But the second chance storyline was what kept me in. The Godzilla scenes were pretty intense as the characters were all developed before they were put in harms way.
After pondering the film a bit after the watch, it grew on me and i would say that I liked the film. Especially if you are a Godzilla fan, this one will continue to the tradition.
There was also a re-release in black and white. I watch part of it on Netflix but didn't get very far. I forwarded a bit too and still did not watch much more. I do not think it hits as hard the second time around for me.
