The Thieves - 神偷大劫案 - 盜賊門 - 盜賊同盟

The Thieves (神偷大劫案/盜賊門/盜賊同盟) is an 2012 film out of Korea. The large ensemble cast include Kim Yoon-seok,Lee Jung-jae, Kim Hye-soo, Jeon Ji-hyun, Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Hae-sook, Oh Dal-soo, Simon Yam, Angelica Lee, and Derek Tsang. The movie is currently the 2nd highest grossing film in Korean cinema. I saw this movie in a local AMC Theaters last fall.

A group of thieves out of Korea rob a wealthy family. A group of thieves in Hong Kong rob a jewelry store. The two groups are now on the run and settle on stealing a diamond from a wealthy lady visiting Macau. The teams have both shown they've got skillz robbing the wealthy family in Korea and the jewelry store in Hong Kong. When they are brought together, the heist goes pretty well until something goes wrong with some of the crew. They get the diamond, but there are casualties and the group now tries to get rid of the diamond. But there's a whole other story after the diamond heist between two members of the Korea crew. Back in Korea, the Korean crew of thieves try to figure it out.

This movie was really really well made. It could rival other heist films like Italian Job, Contrabad, or even Fast Five. However, with the additional storyline after the diamond heist, I lost interest and the movie got boring. I think it adds another 1/3 to the movie and moves into mob story territory. The first 2/3 could stand on its own as a heist movie.

The movie was well made. The set up of the characters and how they relate to each other keep us loving the cast and cry when something bad happens to them. There was both fun, serious, and character driven parts to this film. It was also a big cast to keep track, especially what their skillz are and what their role was in the film. But if they pulled it off with Oceans Eleven, you can pull it off here too. The cast included grizzly veterans of the industry, along with some eye candy for the younger folks.

Even though I was disappointed with the last 1/3 of the movie, it is a well made film and I am looking forward to watching it again.
